• Call for local groups interested in participating
• Speakers confirmed from Elham and Sevenoaks

A major event looking at environmental issues in Hythe has been announced. This will take place on the evening of Thursday 23rd September at the new sports pavilion in Hythe. It is entitled:

‘How green is Hythe; how green could it be?’

The meeting is being organised by the Shepway Green Party and is open to everyone. The aim is to look at ways to improve the town from an environmental perspective. Topics of discussion are likely to include:

improved recycling

waste reduction

energy saving

tree planting

local food supply

greener transport

and how to achieve more sustainable and environmentally friendly developments.

The organisers believe there is a great deal of scope for improvement and plenty to be learnt from the experiences and initiatives of others. Speakers are confirmed from Sevenoaks and Elham:

Should Hythe become a Transition Town?

The Transition Towns network was founded in 2006 in Devon, and has already grown to include over 300 communities in the UK and abroad. Its goal is to build local resilience against the impacts of climate change and rising energy costs, seizing the opportunity to shift gradually to a better way of community life. Steve Plater will explain the experiences to date from Sevenoaks.

Chris Jelly from the Elham Environment Group will explain the many inspiring projects that have been kicked off in Elham over the last couple of years. What can Hythe learn from this community’s efforts?

Our two speakers will be followed by a Q&A and open discussion, with the aim of identifying a number of next steps for Hythe.

Opening Hours

Doors open at 7pm; the meeting starts at 7.30pm. There is no charge but attendees are requested to register beforehand by email or phone (see below) to allow the organisers to gauge numbers.

There will also be a number of complementary local environmental groups in attendance, with a couple confirmed and with the organisers keen to hear from any others interested in participating (there is no charge for this). The organisers would also be delighted to hear from anyone willing to lend a sound system and screen/projector.

Organiser and Shepway Green Party member, Martin Whybrow, commented: ‘This should be a really lively evening, we are looking forward to it and would love to hear from anyone interested in being involved. I know our two speakers well and they have very interesting stories. There is a great deal that can be learnt from their inspiring experiences. I am sure there will be a lot of debate and we would really like to indentify a number of local initiatives that people would like to back.’

Mikhail has given numerous solo recitals and has performed as soloist with the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra and the St Petersburg Hermitage Orchestra. After moving to France he led the cello section of the Lyon Opera Orchestra, also becoming artistic director of the Lille String Sextet. Mikhail has given many recitals and chamber music concerts in France, and with violinist Vanessa Mae toured Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe in 1995 and 1996. He also gave the first European performance of the Cello Concerto by the Israeli composer, Gil Shohat.

Angela has given recitals all over the UK and in Germany, Spain, the Canary Islands and Austria, both as soloist and accompanist and as pianist in the Solarek Piano Trio, which she formed in 1992. She has a special interest in promoting the accessibility of classical music through talks and lecture recitals, and has many years’ experience lecturing in Music Appreciation, both for Birkbeck College, University of London, and for the WEA in Hampshire. Angela has worked with Mikhail since 2006.
