Summer Music Festival organised by the Friends of St Leonard’s Church

The Summer Music Festival organised by the Friends of St Leonard’s Church during 4-12 July 2009 offers a rich and varied feast of music, featuring eleven different events.

The opening recital on Saturday 4th will be given by Rebekka Hartmann (violin) and Caroline Bergius (piano) playing sonatas by Beethoven, Bach and Brahms. Then Dorothee Jansen (soprano) and Francis Grier (piano) will present an afternoon of Schubert songs on Sunday 5th at 3.00pm. A Festival Evensong follows the same evening at 6.30pm when the choir of Holy Trinity Church, Folkestone combines with that of St Leonard’s.

Monday evening, 6 July, will see a welcome return by the popular Norton Knatchbull Jazz and the Highworth Guitar Ensemble at 7.30pm. Local organist Janet Hughes then gives a lunchtime recital on Tuesday 7th at 12.00, when she will be playing works by Bach, Franck, Duruflé and Bossi.

The Festival highlight occasion is on Wednesday 8 July at 7.30pm when the full Choir of Canterbury Cathedral, directed by Dr David Flood, will sing a varied programme.

Another lunchtime recital at 12.00 on Thursday 9th features Anne Norman (cello) and Janet Hughes (at the piano on this occasion) playing music by Bach, Mendelssohn, Fauré and Schumann. An entertaining Evening of Bells, Poetry and Music follows on Friday 10 July at 7.30pm. Then the Primavera Chamber Ensemble will perform Saint-Saëns’s Carnival of the Animals, Schubert’s Trout Quintet and music by Percy Grainger on Saturday 11th at 7.30pm.

A concluding ‘Raise the Roof’ Festival of Favourite Hymns follows on Sunday 12 July at 6.30pm.
